A bog of my own

October 16, 2012

When I first started this permaculture adventure in late July I was hard pressed to find the amount of leaves I needed for the sheet mulching in my zone one veggie garden.  We have a fairly large wood land at the back of our property so I decided to rob Peter to pay Paul.  Walking around in there I stumbled upon a bog.

I must have known it was there at one time or another, but had forgotten about it.

I didn’t think much about it and continued collecting huge bags of leaves for my project.  Then I had the idea of using the very black mucky dirt to cover the ground before applying the cardboard.  It was full of life and looked very fertile.  After digging some of this out I decided to see if we could make a pond out of it.

I know this will be a long term project and will take alot of effort, but the idea of having a water garden makes it all worth it.  In the pictures above you can see the wood chip path I made into the woods and the beginning of my beautiful pond somewhat obscured by the leaf drop from the windy conditions we have had lately.  I know it doesn’t look like much here, but in my head it is beautiful!  My woodland is in zone four an will be left mainly to the wild ones.
