Extending the season

October 12, 2012

Here in Michigan we have some what of a short growing season so we use various methods to extend the season.

I got this little green house last spring and was able to get a little jump on the weather.

It is placed where I want to place a permanent green house in the future.  You can see my little cherry tomato plant and banana pepper plant, along with them I have some kale, cilantro, arugula, red leaf lettuce, spinach and nasurtiums.  So far they seem to be very happy in there.

We have had a few frosts and they haven’t been touched.  To help them stay warm I have put bales of straw on the north and west sides and rocks along the south on the inside.  I also plan on putting buckets of water along the paths to release stored heat during the night.  I read about using a string of christmas lights on the inside on really cold nights totally gonna try that!
