Permaculture guilds and presents from the birds!

October 10, 2012

I could feel winter tapping me on the shoulder this morning.  A very windy and cold day so I have been taking advantage of the time indoors.  My fall cleaning has been sorely neglected and everything was in need of a spruce up.Image

The other day while I was planting on the west side of the house I noticed a perfect permaculture guild.  A guild is something that happens naturally in nature, plants love company and diverse company at that.

First there is a tree then a bush next to it and then some sort of ground cover.  In this case I am not sure what kind of tree it is or what the bush is, the ground cover however I do know, it is a wild grape vine.  The birds gave them to me, lucky me!

This is what I am trying to mimic in my permaculture design.  At least in the food forest part.  I will be planting bushes and ground cover under all of my fruit and nut trees.   They help each other by confusing pests and can bring nitrogen to surrounding trees they also help in cutting down on weeds.  Another awsome thing it can do is bring bees , honey and bumbles, to pollenate!  See how it all works together?  No monoculture for me!
